18 October 2021 Ceremony marking the beginning of works on the reconstruction and modernization of the railway Subotica – Horgos - state border with Hungary The President of the Republic of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, and the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, attended today the ceremony marking the beginning of works on the reconstruction and modernization of the railway Subotica – Horgos - state border with Hungary - (Szeged). "Dear friend, I am grateful that with a lot of courage and a true vision for political relations between Hungarians and Serbs, you created the conditions for completely new relations in which we, Serbs, believe that a stronger Serbia will mean a stronger Hungary. I am happy and proud to be able to say something like this today, in Horgos. We can do a lot together, together we are many times stronger, and everything we build and do shows how much together we can achieve better results. After the completion of this project, the entire area between Szeged and Subotica will become a development hub for tourism, trade and rapprochement of our cultures and peoples", President Vučić pointed out and added that the railway will bring great and concrete results, but that it also shows us that we are in the center of Europe. He said that the completion of works on this railway is planned for November next year. "What is more beautiful and important than living in peace and trusting each other? Serbia has learned a lot from the Hungarian experience, and today it is looking at how to solve energy problems. And we will approach this issue together, as was the case with the gas supply", said President Vučić and emphasized that Subotica has a fantastic future. He announced the reconstruction of the hospital in Subotica, which will cost 40 million euros, a stadium of 22 million euros, and said that four million euros will be set aside for the renovation of the theater. The Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, thanked President Vučić for inviting him to today's event. "We are in an unusual situation. We want to renovate the 150-year-old railway line, and in fact we are laying the foundation stone, because this is a symbol. A symbol of cooperation and joint progress of Hungary and Serbia, which are building a new, common future. We have an agreement with President Vučić, which guarantees that both Hungarians and Serbs will have equal benefits from this cooperation. The citizens of both cities lost a lot because traffic on this railway line became impossible. Foreign forces only brought us unrest and war. Everything that came from outside led to conflicts and backwardness of both nations. The time has now come for us to take our destiny into our own hands", said the Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán, emphasizing that Serbia is the gateway to the Balkans and a key country for Europe's security, and that Hungary is committed to Serbia's membership in the European Union.
